Scent opens gateways. It connects us with the here and now and unfolds ethereal bridges to the inner workings of our bodies and minds. Fragrance can remind us to gently observe where we are at and imbue intention into our self-care.
Roseum brings matters of the heart to the surface. Its rosy, warm aroma offers a sense of the maternal, of safety. For us, this essence is attuned with the practice of compassion towards those around us and ourselves.
Compassion is vital for our wellbeing. Although closely linked, it is distinct from kindness, sympathy and empathy. There is a rich evidence base that emphasises its centrality to living a healthy and happy life. Research studies have shown that acts of compassion activate the vagus nerve, the longest cranial nerve which richly innervates our entire body and manages our responses to stress. They boost ‘the love hormone‘ oxytocin, release dopamine and, with it, feelings of euphoria, and increase levels of serotonin, which helps with the regulation of our mood.
To have meaningful impact, compassionate acts have to be repeated. They have to be an integral part of daily life. Our bodies and minds are rewarded with feel-good chemical substances, but the effect of an isolated act of kindness cannot be long-lasting.
And then, of course, there is the practice of being loving and considerate towards ourselves. Self-compassion is essential for us to be able to self-soothe and regulate ourselves, emotionally and physically. Rituals of self-care are compassionate acts. Washing the complexities of the day off. Nurturing our skin, the delicate barrier between our external and internal world. Self-compassion is not selfish. The more we notice and respond to our needs, the more we have available to give. Self-compassion gifts us the resources to care for others.
May Roseum’s layers of soft rose geranium, citrus accents of petigrain and warm clove be a reminder to us all. Compassion is a foundation for sharing our humanity and being part of a kinder world.
